Mammal Study Award 2025

Toyoshima, H. and Sato, Y. (2024). Camera traps reveal variation in diel activity patterns among different sex-age classes in brown bears in Hokkaido. Mammal Study 49 (4): 359–370.

This study utilized camera trap data to clarify seasonal changes in the sexand age-specific daily activity patterns of brown bears. The authors’ quantitative verification of predictions based on brown bear breeding schedules and ecology, which used extensive and long-term large-scale camera trap data, is highly commendable. Furthermore, beyond basic ecology, the study evaluated the impact of human activities on brown bear behavior, especially as conflicts with humans increase. This is expected to contribute to practical applications for future mitigation strategies.
