Greeting from the Chair of the Organizing Committee

The 2025 Annual Meeting of the Mammal Society of Japan will be held over four days from August 22 to 25 at Rakuno Gakuen University (Ebetsu City) and the Sapporo Education and Culture Hall (Sapporo City). As the Chair of the Organizing Committee, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to all members of the Society.

The previous annual meetings in Okinawa (2023) and Hyogo (2024) were held under intense summer heat. While Hokkaido has also experienced unusual weather in recent years—including record-high summer temperatures and heavy snowfall in winter—we hope that during the meeting period, participants will be able to enjoy Hokkaido’s typically pleasant and comfortable summer climate.

As many of you are aware, Hokkaido has played a crucial role in both basic and applied research on mammals since the early days of Japanese mammalogy in the Meiji era. North of the Blakiston Line, the region is home to a wide range of mammal species, including the brown bear (Ursus arctos)—the largest terrestrial mammal in Japan; theleast shrew (Sorex minutissimus)—the world’s smallest mammal; and the northern pika (Ochotona hyperborea)—a glacial relict species. In nearby coastal waters, you may find the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)—the largest predator on Earth—and the sea otter (Enhydra lutris)—the largest member of the weasel family. For mammalogists, Hokkaido is truly a fascinating field site.

At this year’s meeting, we will host a public symposium on the brown bear—an iconic species of Hokkaido—at the Sapporo Education and Culture Hall. The symposium will also include a performance of traditional Ainu dance, celebrating the culture of Hokkaido’s Indigenous people. Another symposium on the increasingly important topic of wildlife management will be co-hosted with Rakuno Gakuen University. We are also planning several excursions, and our banquet will feature Hokkaido’s renowned local beer and jingisukan (grilled lamb). We hope you will enjoy not only academic exchange, but also the many unique experiences that Hokkaido has to offer.

Please note that Hokkaido attracts many visitors from around the world during the summer season, and accommodations may become difficult to secure. We strongly encourage you to book your lodging as early as possible.

The entire organizing committee is looking forward to welcoming you to Hokkaido.
